Iron Donkey Bicycle Touring
Guided, unguided & independent cycling tours with the flexibility to suit your needs.
At the Iron Donkey they believe that the bicycle is a great way – in many instances the best way – to explore your environment while on vacation. Bicycle touring is particularly liberating, and apart from walking, you can’t get any closer to your surroundings. On a bike you can stop and get off whenever and as often as you like - with no worries about parking. Bicycle touring is better for your health and better for the environment.
The idea of a bicycle tour will conjure up different images to different people. There are those to whom a gentle 20 miles on level terrain with lots of en route stops is the ideal day. For others a 40 mile ride with a little bit of challenge here and there is more what they are after. And then there are the hammerheads who want to ride 60 or 70 miles a day with a couple of mountain passes thrown in for good measure!
We can offer you a bike tour whatever your level of biking experience, expertise and ambition. Our ability to offer this degree of flexibility is rooted in our comprehensive knowledge of the regions in which we run our tours. We can advise you on the itinerary that exactly meets your requirements with regard to terrain, riding distance, duration, challenge, sights of interest, accommodations etc. It is also possible to devise an itinerary that caters for both leisure and hardcore riders in the same trip.

The North of Ireland is a wonderful region for bicycle touring – great scenery, quiet traffic-free roads, the legendary hospitality, wit and humour of the Northern Ireland people, excellent food and a wonderful variety of fascinating sites of interest.
In 2014 the Giro d’Italia came to Northern Ireland for the first time – and the people took the event to their hearts in a big way!
The bike tour explores the northeast corner of the island of Ireland, with the focus being the stunning Causeway Coast, with its jaw-dropping scenery, its castles and its natural wonders. View the day-by-day itinerary below to get an overview of what you will see and experience on the tour.
And at the end of the tour, you may decide to stay on in Belfast for a day or two to fully experience what this remarkable city has to offer. The Titanic Experience and the Game of Thrones tour (the series is filmed in this part of the world) are just two more recent additions to the many attractions. The tour is led by an experienced local guide – his knowledge, and his desire to share it with you – will greatly add to your overall enjoyment.
The tour is suitable for riders of all levels of experience and ambition.

The tour is an exploration of the region and includes the Loop Head peninsula, the Clare coastline and the Burren.
Your start point and the location for your first night’s accommodation is the medieval town of Ennis. The first biking leg leads west to meet the Atlantic Coast at Kilkee, where you stay for two nights. The loop ride from the town is around the aptly named Loop Head Peninsula. Leaving Kilkee you ride north along the Atlantic Coast to the spa town of Lisdoonvarna for another two-night stopover. The loop ride from here takes you around the Burren coastline. From Lisdoonvarna you explore the remote eastern Burren en route to Kinvarra on the shores of Galway Bay. The final leg gives you the option of either returning to Ennis, or continuing north to finish in Galway.

The region is typically 'Irish', and provides a great introduction to the country for first time visitors.
The terrain is, for the most part, gently undulating. Although there are mountains at the heart of the region, the roads go around them rather than over them. There are however, some good climbing opportunities for those who want a challenge on the latter half of the tour.
There are plenty of biking options available, allowing each rider to bike just as much, or as little, as he or she wants on any given day.
There are plenty of great accommodation options.
There is the opportunity to enjoy traditional music session on several evenings.
An overnight on the Aran Islands is a real highlight.
The region is readily accessible from both Shannon International and Dublin International Airports.
