Southwest Ireland is home to some of the most awe-inspiring landscapes the country has to offer, making it a dream destination for cycling holidays.
Starting in Killarney, the adventure begins with a ride through the famous lakes and the majestic Macgillycuddy’s Reeks, Ireland’s highest mountain range. Highlights include the scenic ascent to Moll’s Gap and a stunning coastal ride along Kenmare Bay, showcasing the area’s incredible natural beauty.
A standout feature of this tour is two days spent exploring the lesser-known Beara Peninsula, a true hidden gem of Ireland. This remote region boasts rugged coastal views, colourful villages like Eyeries and Allihies, and opportunities for cultural immersion. You’ll enjoy a rest day in Castletownbere, a charming fishing village where you can take a boat to Bere Island or visit the ruins of Dunboy Castle.
The journey also includes a visit to Gougane Barra, a serene glacial valley home to one of Ireland’s most picturesque lakeside retreats. Another highlight is the Sheep’s Head Peninsula, a jewel of West Cork with breathtaking views and tranquil surroundings. The tour winds its way through Muckross National Park, passing iconic sites like the famous Ladies’ View, before returning to Killarney.
This tour combines the dramatic scenery of mountains, glacial valleys, and coastal routes with the vibrant culture of Ireland’s southwest. From the bustling character of Killarney to the tranquillity of Gougane Barra, the itinerary offers a mix of adventure and relaxation. Designed for cyclists of all levels, the route includes quiet backroads, gentle climbs, and opportunities to connect with Ireland’s rich heritage.
Plan your cycling holiday today and explore the unspoilt beauty of Southwest Ireland. Whether it’s the remote charm of the Beara Peninsula or the iconic landscapes of Killarney, this tour promises an unforgettable journey through one of Ireland’s most stunning regions.
There are several hills on the route but you have all day to do the cycling. You will be provided with a more comprehensive route description and map at the start of the tour. There is an option each day for a variety of longer routes. Except for the roads in and out of Killarney, the traffic on the route should be quite light. You should however cycle carefully at all times, especially when going downhill.
The roads are all tarmacked and the route is designed to ensure that you spend most of the week on quiet backroads, away from the main tourist routes.
