Immersed in the sparkling blue of the Adriatic Sea and known for its wonderful food and warm, sunny days, there is something magical about the Croatian peninsula of Istria.
Home to meandering country lanes, hidden coves, hill top villages, old railway lines and plenty of places
serving delicious ice cream, Istria is the perfect place for a family cycling holiday. We've mixed
cycling routes with cave visits, a spot of snorkelling, plenty of time for swimming in the warm sea,
tasty picnics and some family friendly sea kayaking in the beautiful fjord of Lim. We'll cycle on
undulating roads and tracks which take us through vineyards and olive groves, plus peddle along
the old railway track of the Paranzana. With it's pretty views, hill top town and picturesque rivers,
the Parenzana also hides secret tunnels which we'll discover. A holiday highlight is a day sea
kayaking in the calm waters of Lim fjord where we'll stop at wild beaches to swim and snorkel
before exploring a bat cave.
Based in the seaside resort of Porec and the beautiful Venetian town
of Rovinj, we really get to experience the very best of Istria including its excellent food. Evening
meals will be spent in local restaurants or outside on piazzas, and with plenty of family friendly
menus on offer, you'll find everything from pizzas and pasta to local Istrian specialities alongside
excellent wines that the region is famous for. Basing ourselves in only two places means less
packing and unpacking and more time for activities and relaxing. If you're looking to cycle with
your family and make new friends, plus have all the peddling routes and activities taken care of,
then this wonderful Croatian family adventure holiday won't disappoint.

Immersed in the blue of the Adriatic Sea, there is something magical about Istria, the largest (3600 square kilometres) and most northerly of the Croatian peninsulas.
The coastal strip, known locally as Blue Istria, is popular with sun-seekers during the summer months, while the interior, or Green Istria, is another story entirely. Here, we will find a world of shading forest, historic hilltop towns, vineyards, olive groves and picturesque rivers. It’s the perfect place for a leisurely cycling holiday.
We start our exploration at Buje, close to Croatia’s northern border with Slovenia, then head south slowly, picking out all of the highlights of this delightful corner of Europe. From the lighthouse at Savudrija to medieval settlements such as Groznjan, we will ride on country roads and then for 2 days on the delightful dismantled railway track of the Parenzana through the rolling hills of the 'Croatian Tuscany'. We will visit wine cellars to sample some of the local favourites, such as Malvasia and Teran. We will also take every opportunity to chill out in pavement cafes overlooking the rolling Istrian countryside and to enjoy local Istrian culinary specialities. Spending time in the coastal towns of Porec and Rovinj and Pula, we will be able to appreciate their beauty, whilst learning a little of their rich histories. If you are looking for a leisurely cycling holiday, with a stunning mix of landscape, culture, delicious food and excellent wines, this is one to consider.

Gentle hills, valleys and forests, small picturesque towns on hilltops framed by rivers - the beauty of Istria will surely take your breath away.
One of the best ways to discover it is certainly by bike. Explore the former narrow-gauge railway line Parenzana, now turned into a cycling track which passes through some of the most beautiful parts of Istria. Enjoy cycling through the charming medieval town of Motovun, situated on a hilltop, offering stunning views of the green vineyards and olive groves of top Istrian producers.
In the past, this railroad used to connect with the lands of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy, and served to send quality products from Istria to the imperial and royal courts. But it also connected 33 towns and villages on its way. After the economic and industrial crisis in 1935 the railway line was terminated and disassembled, and today it offers the cyclist who follows its current path an exploration of the beauty of Istria.
