A self-guided ride through Vesterålen, just north of the famous Lofoten Islands.

This self-guided, eight-day ride explores Vesterålen, the quieter archipelago just north of Lofoten, from Sortland to Stokmarknes. Riders follow quiet roads past fjords, sweeping coastlines, dramatic peaks and marshlands, with luggage transferred between stays.

The route reaches Nyksund, a fishing village once abandoned as a ghost town and now revived. A rest day allows a hike along the Queen's Route (Dronningruta), voted Norway's most beautiful hike in 2012. Later stages include a long climb and tunnel towards Kråkberget, a relaxed stay in Bø, and a RIB boat transfer from Ringstad to Stokmarknes.

From June to mid-July, the midnight sun allows late-evening riding. Maps, a guidebook, GPX files and a travel app support each day.

Highlights:

  • Quiet roads past fjords, coastlines, peaks and marshlands
  • Nyksund, a revived fishing village
  • Hike the Queen's Route (Dronningruta) between Nyksund and Stø
  • Cycle the Ryggedal tunnel section, followed by a long downhill
  • RIB boat transfer from Ringstad to Stokmarknes
  • Midnight sun riding from June to mid-July

Surface and terrain:
Mostly quiet roads in slightly hilly terrain, partly along fjords and partly inland. The last 10 km of Day 2 is a narrow dirt road. Day 4 has a long climb towards the Ryggedal tunnel, a 1,600 m tunnel, then a long descent. Day 5 is short and easy.

Suitable for:
Nature lovers and moderately fit riders comfortable navigating with maps and GPX files. Daily distances are modest, though Day 4 is long and partly demanding (a boat shortcut is available). A good, quieter alternative to Lofoten.
