Bike from Tromsø to Lofoten through the Land of the Midnight Sun.

This self-guided, eight-day ride follows the Arctic coast from Tromsø to Svolvær, the "capital" of Lofoten, covering roughly 350 km. Riders pass fjords, dramatic peaks, sandy beaches and fishing villages, with luggage transferred between stays.

The route crosses the long bridge to Kvaløya and reaches Sommarøy, then ferries to Senja, Norway's second-largest island. Here the Scenic Route winds in and out of fjords with steep climbs, tunnels and descents. A second ferry leads to Andøya, with its marshlands, peaks and the long beach at Bleik, before the route continues to Sortland in Vesterålen.

On the second last day, riders choose between cycling on to Svolvær or taking the Hurtigruten coastal ferry through Trollfjorden. Parts of the route follow National Cycle Route 1 and EuroVelo 1.

Highlights:

  • Ride from Tromsø to Svolvær through the Land of the Midnight Sun
  • Norwegian Scenic Routes on Senja and Andøya
  • Island hopping by ferry between Senja and Andøya
  • Fishing villages, sandy beaches and dramatic peaks along the coast
  • Optional Hurtigruten coastal ferry through Trollfjorden

Surface and terrain:
Paved coastal and island roads, including two Norwegian Scenic Routes. Hilly, with steep climbs to passes (up to about 150 m), seven lit tunnels on Senja and flatter riding on Andøya. The longest Day 7 option has more E10 traffic, and an optional Andøya loop is gravel.

Weather:
The season is June to August, and the midnight sun is visible in Tromsø from 19 May to 27 July.

Suitable for:
Fit, experienced riders comfortable with hilly stages, tunnels, ferries and self-navigation. Daily distances are mostly 40 to 63 km, with a long option on Day 7. Rated moderate to challenging.
