We have several West Coast day ride options that will take you through some of the best sections along the trail, all easily accessible from our Cycle Journeys Depot in Hokitika.

Our West Coast day ride options are suitable for all levels of riding, so choose from our options below, or talk to us about hiring a bike to explore for the day.

Mahinapuna Magic (15km) 2 hours

  • Start your day by strolling amongst the rainforest canopy and enjoying panoramic views from the impressive Treetop Walk before hopping on your bike for a relaxing ride back to town through the magnificent forest and wetlands of the Mahinapua Scenic Reserve. This ride takes you through pristine wetlands and continues through native forest bordering Mahinapua Creek, host to many species of waterfowl and other bird life. Cycle through a scenic reserve with forest giants that were once ubiquitous on the coast. Finish the day by following the river out to Sunset Point and then finally along the promenade for a photo stop at the iconic driftwood “Hokitika” sign on the beachfront.

The Big Day Out (53km) $108 6-7 hours

  • Immerse yourself in some of the most spectacular landscapes along the West Coast Wilderness Trail. Starting at the Kawhaka Canal, you will ride amidst majestic native forest, pedal through a stunning mountain-ringed valley, cross crystal-clear rivers and then discover one of New Zealand’s most picturesque lakes, Kaniere.
The trail then plunges back into the bush for a fun cruise along an historic water race and then down the sweeping tree-lined pathway known as the Pipeline. Take a breath while you meander down peaceful Kaniere Road towards Hokitika before the final leg along the historic Kaniere Tramway and the banks of the Hokitika River.

Hokitika Lakes and Waterways (26-32km) $108 2-3 hours

  • Take in some of the best of the West Coast’s untamed natural wilderness. Join our shuttle at 9.30am for a short ride to the beautiful Hokitika Gorge, where you can experience a guided loop walk on spectacular swing bridges overlooking glacial turquoise water and lush rainforest.
By late morning, head inland on the road to Dorothy Falls and an optional start to your ride. Cycle past lakefront holiday homes to get to the start of the single track ride that journeys through native forest and alongside historic waterways. The track takes you to the outskirts of Hokitika and a final riverside trail leads into town, before returning to your accommodation.
