Slow down to see the world
Butterfield & Robinson designs, plans and guides trips of a lifetime all over the world.
We go by bike, by foot, by water—whatever moves us. Our mantra is “Slow down to see the world.” We go slowly to soak up the very best a region has to offer. This has been our modus operandi since 1966, and we can’t imagine doing it any other way.
Travel isn’t just about crossing off those wish list destinations or hurrying from one tourist attraction to the next. Rather, it's a chance to explore the world in a way that challenges our perspectives and broadens our understanding of humanity's values.
Our approach to Slow Travel is rooted in the idea that by experiencing new cultures and ways of life, we can recognize the universal values that unite us. By creating authentic travel experiences, we hope to give our travellers a better understanding of the world and the people who inhabit it. At least that's our opinion.

Journey into the Sahara
Have the experience of a lifetime on a bike or, if you prefer, an amicable camel. Go from bustling souks to Berber villages and crumbling kasbahs. Lose yourself overnight in the silky Saharan dunes at a breathtaking tented camp, and luxuriate at Kasbah Tamadot, Dar Ahlam and Riad Farnatchi (exclusive to us). You’ll think you’re walking toward a mirage, but trust us, it’s all real.
Daily biking distances usually vary from 20 to 50 km (12 to 30 mi.), with options on some days as far as 62 km (40 mi.). The terrain is generally flat, with a few hills along the way when we’re closer to the High Atlas Mountains. The difficulty of the ride often depends on which way the wind is blowing. The walking routes are mostly flat, except for our day in the Atlas Mountains.

Cycling In Northern Fjordland
Between gorgeous, deep fjords, cascading waterfalls and mountain peaks often compared to the spires of churches, Norway has a strong handle on elemental drama and diversity. Travelling between small towns by ferry and bike, we embark on fjord-side rides, dine on local organic food (picture garden lunches and fresh-caught fish) and pass the time with our local friends as they share Norweigan tales and show us around their breathtaking country.
The riding is varied, with the majority of terrain on flat stretches and a few gradual climbs. There will be a couple of challenging climbs that can be conquered at your own pace (and perhaps even enjoyed, as they bring us to more amazing vistas!) The days’ distances range from 25 to 64 km (15 to 40 mi.).

Our Little Secret In Italy
Nowhere does slowing down feel more appropriate than Piemonte, the birthplace of 'Slow Food', where epicurean delights await around every corner and verdant vineyards abound. On this trip, you'll indulge in fresh cuisine paired with many of the best vintages (on us, naturally), ride through UNESCO-listed villages and sparkling wine hubs, then kick back at your intimate and gorgeous stay.
The riding varies, with all varieties of uphill and down (and even—VERY occasionally—a hint of flat). Roads are delightfully quiet, although with the occasional short rough patch. Both hybrid and road bikes are perfectly suitable for this trip’s terrain and roads. If you complete the full option daily rather than taking advantage of van shuttles, the trip would be rated avid: e-bikes are highly recommended for anyone not in love with challenging hill climbs.

Ride The Land Of Saints & Scholars
Sweep through verdant hills, follow rocky coastlines and tip back a pint of Guinness. We have Connemara's authentic landscapes, culture and music to ourselves. And if you're a wee bit peckish? Fresh mussels, tender lamb, wild salmon and craft cheeses will sate your Irish appetite.
The terrain is generally rolling, with rare flat sections. That said, the climbs and descents are generally neither long nor steep. Daily distances average around 41 km (25.5 mi.), with several challenging longer options available.

Biking Through Anicent Lands
Modern Japan stands as a testament to its vibrant past; a nation whose dynamic culture is built on the fusion of ancient customs and innovation. From the serenity of centuries-old temples to the bustling energy of neon-lit cities, this land shines through its striking contrasts. On this adventure, soak in mountain hot springs and marvel at beautifully tended gardens while indulging in the island nation's world-famous cuisine. Pedal through Japan’s most picturesque pockets, where country roads, fishing villages and towering mountain ranges are the backdrop of each unforgettable ride.
The daily distances range from 25-50+ km (16-31 mi.) with longer options available. Most rides have several climbs of 2-4 km, some gradual and some steep, but the B&R van will be there should you need a little boost. The routes have very little traffic as we often travel on roads not frequented by the local population. Road quality is excellent. Of our trips outside Europe, this one offers some of the purest and most beautiful biking. If you are comfortable riding a road bike then we recommend that you do so for this trip.

Luberon's Hilltop Villages And Valley Vineyards
Journey through lavender landscapes, past perched villages and majestic cypresses on a trip that's pure Provençal. Slow down to the pace of Provence, and delight in everything from boules lessons to a stay in the 17th c. Bastide de Marie. Along the way, enjoy antique shopping and a visit to an exquisite private domaine hosted by a sommelier you won't soon forget.
Most of the riding on this trip is quite manageable, becoming slightly more challenging on Day 3 when we head westward. However, where the hills are challenging, the B&R van is there to help out weary riders. We do our best to keep the riding on quiet roads. Daily distances average 50 km (31 mi.), with the option for a 100 km (62 mi.) on Day 4.
