Basecamp523
Ride, Slow down, Discover
Basecamp523 is a cycling tour operator based in Fabriano, in the Marche region of central Italy. They were founded in 2021 by Marco Trivelli and his partner, who left city careers behind after a long bike journey through Patagonia changed Marco's outlook. The name comes from the family home of Marco's ancestors, which sits 523 metres above sea level and serves as their "base camp". The business got started through Restartapp, an accelerator focused on rural and mountain areas, and was later selected for Ideaboosterlab at Bocconi University in Milan.
They design gravel, e-bike and mountain bike trips on quiet white roads through Le Marche, Umbria, Tuscany and Romagna, well away from the main tourist routes. Trips run as guided tours with a local guide and support vehicle, self-guided tours with booked accommodation and luggage transfers, or unsupported rides using their roadbooks and GPX tracks. The range goes from a two-day tree tent overnight to an eight-day coast to coast crossing of Marche, Umbria and Tuscany, graded easy, intermediate or expert. Stays are in agriturismi, B&Bs, a mountain hut and tree tents, and many itineraries include visits to winemakers, beekeepers, olive oil mills and artisans.
Their stated values are fun, sustainability and inspiration, with an emphasis on supporting small local producers and rural communities. Every trip comes with a free consultation before booking, and deposits are protected by a guarantee fund. They also offer tailor-made itineraries, corporate trips and bike rental.

An interactive, experiential self-guided journey through Le Marche, pedalling from the peaks of the Apennines to the crystal-clear sea of the Conero.
This self-guided journey through Le Marche runs from the Umbro-Marchigiano Apennines to the Conero Riviera, crossing two nature parks on low-traffic roads. After a welcome aperitif and briefing in Fabriano, riders explore the Gola della Rossa and Frasassi Natural Park, taking in the Frasassi Caves, the Valadier Temple set into the rock, and Sassoferrato, one of Italy's most beautiful villages.
The route then crosses the Apennines to Montecarotto and a traditional farmhouse among the vineyards, before rolling through the hills of Verdicchio and Lacrima di Morro d'Alba to San Marcello, with sunset views over the Adriatic. From there it heads south via Polverigi to Offagna, perched on a tufa rock.
The final stage enters the Monte Conero Natural Park, visiting the Camerano Caves before finishing in Sirolo, the "Pearl of the Adriatic". Most days offer shorter or longer route options, with optional workshops in papermaking, beekeeping and olive oil tasting.
Highlights:
- Frasassi Caves and the Valadier Temple in the Gola della Rossa and Frasassi Natural Park
- Fabriano's papermaking tradition and the village of Sassoferrato
- Apennine crossing to Arcevia and a farmhouse stay among the vineyards of Montecarotto
- Verdicchio and Lacrima di Morro d'Alba wine country, with Adriatic sunsets from San Marcello
- Hilltop Offagna and the sunflower fields of the Marche hills
- Monte Conero Natural Park, the Camerano Caves and the beaches of Sirolo
Surface and terrain:
Low-traffic roads mixing paved sections and well-maintained white (gravel) roads, plus a coastal cycle path on the longer Day 4 option. Hilly throughout, from the Apennines across rolling vineyard country to the Conero coast. Gravel bike or e-bike recommended.
Suitable for:
Occasional or returning cyclists wanting an independent trip without extreme climbs or very long days, with an interest in food, wine, sustainability and local culture. They rate it Easy, though the daily climbing suggests an e-bike for less fit riders.
