Adventure Bike Trails' original 15-day expedition through Tanzania's remote wildest terrain.

The Kilimanjaro Bike Trail is the founding trip, running since 2011. It spans 15 days through Tanzania, including 11 riding days covering 1,143 km, with 2 rest days built in to recover and take in the surroundings.

The route passes through remote villages rarely visited by tourists, sharing the road with local traffic including livestock and children on school runs. Nights are spent under clear, star-filled skies, largely camping along the way. Described by the operator as an expedition rather than a holiday, it's built around raw effort, dust and heat rather than comfort-focused touring.

Highlights:

  • Ride 1,143 km across Tanzania's wildest, most remote terrain over 11 cycling days
  • Pass through remote villages where tourism rarely reaches, sharing roads with local life and livestock
  • Camp under exceptionally clear, star-filled night skies
  • Two rest days built in across the 15-day journey to recover and take in the surroundings
  • Access to the Ngorongoro Crater as part of the trip (noted as an extra, cost/inclusion unclear, see below)

Surface and terrain:

The route suits either a mountain bike or gravel bike, though a mountain bike is more comfortable. Given remote village and rough-road references, terrain is mixed/unpaved in places,

Weather:

Trips are scheduled outside the rainy season, though occasional tropical showers are possible. Temperature varies with altitude: around 25°C at higher elevations, 30-35°C lower down. Manageable despite the tropical climate.

Suitable for:

Experienced, physically prepared cyclists wanting a genuine expedition-style challenge rather than a comfort-focused holiday. Larger group size (15-25) suggests a sociable, established group format.
