From the Pyramids of Giza to Table Mountain, explore Africa from top to bottom on TDA's flagship cycling expedition
Our original trans-continental journey and flagship expedition crossing Africa from north to south, covering 11,000 km in four months. A test of mind, body, and bicycle. Traveling through 10 countries in all, you will cycle along the Nile past ancient temples, through the Sudanese desert, and up and down the biblical landscapes of Ethiopia’s rugged Simien Mountains. After crossing the Equator in Kenya, you will pedal past legendary Mount Kilimanjaro, to Lake Malawi, Victoria Falls, and along the edges of the magnificent Kalahari and Namib deserts, en route to the finish of your epic journey in beautiful Cape Town, South Africa.
The trans-African crossing from Cairo to Cape Town has been one of the world’s epic journeys ever since Cecil Rhodes’ 19th century dream of connecting South Africa and Egypt by rail. Since then, the route has become an iconic goal for global adventurers. Over the years individuals have attempted to complete the route using every kind of transport imaginable, with many forced to abandon their quest due to physical challenges and geopolitical complications. In 2003, the inaugural Tour d’Afrique succeeded in cycling the entire distance and in the process established the Guinness World Record for the fastest human powered crossing of Africa.
Starting at the Pyramids, under the watchful eyes of the immortal Sphinx, the cyclists will head south along the Red Sea and the Nile River in Egypt, visiting the famous sites of Luxor, Aswan and Abu Simbel, before entering Sudan. After enjoying the desert climes and warm hospitality of the Sudanese people, the tour climbs up into Ethiopia which is renowned for its rugged landscapes, its unique culture and cuisine, and it’s fast growing economy.
Having conquered the challenges of Ethiopia, the tour then enters more westernized Kenya, crossing the remote Dida Galgalu desert en route to Nairobi. With Mount Kilimanjaro looming in the distance, you’ll then ride into the verdant and wildlife rich country of Tanzania, and enjoy a triple rest day in the safari capital of Arusha. The tour then descends into less known Malawi, the “Warm Heart of Africa,” where the riders will savour the shore and surf of Lake Malawi and ride alongside some of that nation’s many cycling farmers. After crossing Zambia from east to west we arrive at the Zambezi river and stand in awe at the world famous Victoria Falls.
The final month of our trans-Africa expedition begins in pancake flat Botswana where you are bound to encounter elephants along the road. From there the tour spins into Namibia, one of Africa’s hidden gems, and across its harsh but stunning desert landscapes. After crossing the Senqu (Orange) river the tour enters its 10th and final country, South Africa, a land of beauty, contrast and rich history. As the tour comes to an end at Cape Town’s picturesque South Atlantic ocean harbour, in the shadow of majestic Table Mountain, we’ll look back at our amazing journey and celebrate it’s completion with lifelong friends.

Join this self-powered caravan through ancient Asian empires along the world's most famous trading route
Our 13,000 kilometre self-powered caravan begins in Beijing, China, the political and cultural centre of China and follows the northern Silk Route across mysterious lands, fiery deserts, and forbidding mountains. Almost 20 weeks later we arrive in faraway Istanbul, the majestic capital of Byzantium, the Roman Empire, the Ottomans and now the Republic of Turkey.
Starting in Beijing's historic centre, we’ll follow the Silk Route northwest before dropping back south in Central Asia. Included are visits to four destinations definitely off the beaten track - enigmatic Iran where we will marvel at that country's Persian past, the Pamir Highway in Tajikistan where we will climb to over 4600 meters and cycle across the 'Roof of the World', mysterious Kazakhstan where we will pedal through the immense steppes, the site of Soviet nuclear tests and successful space landings, and distant Mongolia, where riders will cycle along ancient trading routes through the vast steppes and meet the country's friendly nomadic people, experiencing their age old traditions.
As a Silk Route participant, you will ride to the mystical Central Asian cities of Samarqand, Bukhara, and Merv, and camp amongst the stunning meadows, rivers and peaks of Kyrgyzstan. There are points where quietness pervades, and where the original travellers of the Silk Route seem to be just beyond the next hill, beckoning you further along this arduous trek. Time and time again, you will be amazed at the layers of history emerging from the sand, shake your head at all that has been lost and take heart from all that is being preserved and created.
Each group of Silk Route riders are enriched by an intricate knowledge of ancient lands crossed, the inspiration that comes from sharing a grand adventure with new friends and fellow nomads, and the inner peace that comes with meeting a life-changing challenge head on. Whether you are lured by the chance to stay in timeless caravanserais and shop in bazaars that have thrived for thousands of years, or have dreamt of traveling 'the Golden Road,' we look forward to having you join us on this unforgettable journey.

This area is a little more conservative, and we see many men with beards, and women wearing traditional dress. A precipitous cycling descent takes us into the deep cleft of the Pyanj valley where the massive Pyanj river marks the border with Afghanistan. Cycling through small villages, we follow the river upstream to Khorog, capital of the Pamirs. From Khorog, we set out riding along the Pamir Highway, climbing the picturesque Gunt valley to the summit of the Koi Tezek Pass (4,200m). Threading our way through the mountains we reach the small town of Murgab, not far from the Chinese border.
Our route continues north to climb the 4,655m Ak Baital Pass, the highest point of the cycle tour. On the far side of the pass, biking through a remote valley we reach the the hauntingly beautiful lake at Kara Kul. From here, we ascend the Kyzl Art Pass and enter Kyrgyzstan. A very rough descent from the pass takes us out into the wide grassy Alay valley, studded with the Kyrgyz nomads traditional yurts. There are spectacular views of the 7,000m summits Pik Lenin and Pik Kommunizma. We transfer by vehicle to Osh, Kygygzstan's second city and take a flight to Kyrgyzstan capital Bishkek where the Pamir Highway mountain bike tour ends.

Our Cycling tour to Spiti gives you the high of biking in the Himachal without having to push your body to its limits.
Unlike our tour in Ladakh in which you get to cross some of the highest passes in the world, the Himachal Spiti Cycling tour is physically less demanding, but the landscape is just as otherworldly.
A world within a world’ is how Rudyard Kipling described Spiti valley, and we think the Nobel laureate was right on the money. It’s not until you leave behind the apple orchards and lush green mountains of Kinnaur in the North Indian state of Himachal Pradesh and enter the sparsely vegetated cold desert mountains of Spiti that the heft of Kipling’s words begins to sink in. It wouldn’t be a stretch to call this landscape Martian. The intriguing hues and colors of the mountains can easily kindle the geologist in you. Cyclists have been known to spend endless moments gawping at the lay of the land while crossing a pass or rounding a high hairpin bend.
Starting out at the altitude of 2700 meters above sea level, the route through Spiti Valley takes you as low as 980m and as high as 4079m. On the way, you will come upon ancient trade routes, pass by quaint villages, and visit famous monasteries. Buddhism is the major religion of people in Spiti region and the local culture is a far cry from urban ways.
Our itinerary has been drawn to give you the best cycling experience under the circumstances. There may be some short steep ascents on which you gain more than 800 meters while cycling over a distance of just 15 km, but such challenges are par for the course. No two days of rough and tough cycling are put back to back. Our experienced guides and support staff for Cycling in Spiti Valley in Himachal will always be at hand throughout the tour, should you need any assistance.

Tour Operator Bike Dreams
From the middle to the end of the world in 11.000 kilometres.
Most people have seen the famous pictures of South America. The ruins of the Incas surrounded by rainforest and deep valleys. Snow covered summits and volcanic cones. Indians in colourful traditional costumes. Magnificent granite pillars. Vast white salt plains and immense glaciers. South-America has so much more to offer. Bike Dreams has created a wonderful route which incorporates many attractions allowing you to experience the full beauty of the South American continent. We would like to introduce an incredible bike expedition : "The Andes Trail", from the middle to the end of the world in 11.000 kilometres.
The Mitad-del-Mundo monument at the equator marks the start line of this epic journey. The first stages in Ecuador you cycle through the mountainous heart of the country and pass sleeping volcanoes. Isolated areas and tough climbs await you in Peru, but you don't have to miss the highlights of Machu Picchu and Lake Titicaca. You'll bike at high altitudes at the altiplano in Bolivia.
Crossing the flat plateau with little oxygen, herds of llama and vague tracks on the white salt of the Salar-de-Uyuni makes the cycling a surrealistic experience. The trail drops further down into Argentina with a mix of landscapes : coloured canyons, giant cacti, green valleys, the pampas and the Aconcagua - the highest mountain of the American continent. You cross the Argentinean-Chilean border more than once to experience the best of which Patagonia has to offer : crystal blue lakes, impressive glaciers, green forests and craggy, granite peaks. The finishing line of this grandiose bike ride is drawn in Ushuaia, the most southern city on the globe, the entrance gate to Antarctica and called the Fin-del-Mundo. The "End-of-the-World".
The start of "The Andes Trail" is at July 29th, 2022 from the equator, just outside Quito. The finish is 140 days later and 11.000 kilometres (6.875 miles) further south in Ushuaia at December 15th, 2022.
You can expect all kinds of conditions along the trail. The majority of the roads is nicely paved, but you come also across some rough roads with washboards, rocks and loose sand. The weather conditions can also vary enormously in the Andes. Although we have chosen the best season, intense heat, severe rain showers, freezing temperatures and fierce wind are still possible. The high altitudes give an extra dimension to the tour. Anyway, smooth roads or dirt tracks, good or bad weather; it is all part of the game. You cover the kilometres within your own capabilities and in a pace you determine. This means that you can take it easy and enjoy the beauty of the Andes in all her facets. The landscape, the culture and the people.
"The Andes Trail" is more than just a normal bike ride. It's a combination of the physical challenge, the adventure, the appreciation of the natural beauty and above all, a mental freedom. Next to that, the bike journey is open for cyclists from all around the world to create an exceptional atmosphere, during as well as after the bike ride.
