10 Reasons to take a Guided Bike Tour

Riding with a tour guide opens up a whole new window to your experience. It's the way to make the most of your holiday with the least amount of effort (well, non-cycling effort anyway!). So how does it do this and why would you go on a guided bike tour?
- You have no time (or inclination) for planning of the logistics like accommodation, bikes, routes, or sights along the way. You can't afford to or don't want to just 'wing it' and hope for the best.
- Routes and navigation are done for you and are easy to follow, even if you're not riding with the guide all the time - so no getting lost! You may be directionally challenged, terrible at reading maps or using a GPS device or would prefer to be living 'in the moment' during your tour, taking in the sights and sounds around you.
- Guided tours are usually group tours and are generally fairly small) - the guide and other riders will support and encourage each other.
- A support van (or 'SAG wagon') will carry your luggage and you may even be able to get a lift If you're tired (check before you book, as this isn't always possible). Just carry day stuff like a camera, sun screen or whatever you need on hand. Even water bottles and snacks are often provided (but check!).
- Language and cultural issues become a relative non-issue, giving you an easy introduction to local life. Misunderstandings and faux pas are avoided with no embarrassment or delay for anyone!
- Your guide is usually a local, or has a local with them, and is more than a ride leader - giving additional insights and in-depth knowledge. He or she is the difference between using a checklist and enjoying an engaging story or narrative about the area, culture, history and other anecdotes.
- The perks of travelling with an experienced guide or local could include VIP treatment at local restaurants or businesses, local festivities, or personalised visits and experiences you couldn't do on your own. You also support the local community.
- You won't miss important sights and worthwhile stops on the way - or realise when it's too late! Even if you prefer to travel independently, at your own pace and timing, but you did the same trip again with a tour guide, you'd probably find you barely scratched the surface and had a very different experience.
- Mechanical issues or punctures do happen - despite being on a well-serviced bike. The guide or support crew will be able to assist - there may even be a dedicated mechanic.
- Camaraderie - both on and off the bike. You'll probably have more in common than a love of cycling or active travel. And, although an ideal activity for social distancing in the Covid era, you can also be as social as you like while riding, at mealtimes or breaks, in the evening or on any rest days. There is plenty of space (a tour is not a race so you won't be riding as a closely bunched peloton!) and even if you're not with the guide all the time, they will be close by and easily contactable.
