Minnesota has a wealth of rail-trails that are perfect for the type of riding we like to offer. As we created this tour, we figured that any bike tour of this length in Minnesota should include the state's very popular Lake Wobegon Trail, the Paul Bunyan Trail and the Root River Trail, so that's exactly what we've done. We're also including another excellent paved trail, the Cannon Valley Trail, which offers a ride in the Upper Mississippi River valley and its bluff country. Almost every bit of trail on this tour are paved. Many of them are wider than average, too. Minnesota's trail locations are spread out, which makes van transportation a necessity. We'll get to see many different types of scenery and landscapes during our time here, ranging from prairie and farmlands, woodlands and forests, hill country, the North Woods, glacial lakes, and riparian/wetland communities alongside rivers and streams. And in those varied habitats we're sure to see lots of wildlife - bring those binoculars!
Our journey begins and ends in Minneapolis as we make a big 'figure 8' around parts of the state. Lake Wobegon features farmland, prairie, woods and small towns. Paul Bunyan Trail is in the North Woods country with its glacial lakes. The Root River trail follows its namesake stream for 41 miles as it winds from Preston to Houston through a totally different type of woodlands, farms and small towns. Cycling is very popular in Minnesota and we're sure to be treated very well everywhere we go. Hope you'll join us!
