Mountain Biking Backcountry Tibet Tour
In the Shadow of Minya Konka
10 Days Challenging 230 KmAVG 32 Km
This Eastern Tibet backcountry mountain bike tour is not for the faint of heart. Only an exclusive band of riders will thrive at these extreme elevations. Simply put, for such riders the prize of a one or two hour descent is worth any amount of climbing.
For the backcountry cycling tour profiled below, five out of the seven days of riding do not offer a pedal stroke under 3000m (10,000ft), six days of riding will take you above 4000m (13,000ft), and one day will take you to a maximum elevation of 4550m (14,760ft).
Day 1: Arrive in Chengdu. Settle into the comfort of the Fraser Suites in downtown Chengdu before enjoying a walk through the Tibetan quarter. Dinner will be enjoyed at China's historical Three Kingdoms era Zhuge Liang Memorial Temple and Jin Li Ancient Street.
Day 2: Chengdu to Kangding (shuttle). Leave the lowlands of the Sichuan basin and travel to the edge of the Tibetan Qinghai plateau. Everything becomes new: landscape, climate, cuisine, language, customs, and of course, the people. After dinner in Kangding, head up the valley to your guesthouse (3,200m). Distance: 325km.
Day 3: RIDE DAY 1: Panpan Mt. Ride. Today is guaranteed to be one of your top three rides of the whole trip. See some nomad life as you ride a gentle 8km up to Panpan pass at 4200m, then hold on for over one hour of rewarding downhill (17km) on the other side. Max. elevation: 4200m.
Day 4: RIDE DAY 2: Tagong Ridge Ride. After a morning shuttle to the trailhead, ride another gentle switchback road up to the ridge ride at 4200m. Traverse a couple of kilometers along the ridge before descending to the valley floor below, and then settling in for the night in the nomad village of Tagong.
Day 5: RIDE DAY 3: Yala Mt. North. Spend the morning traversing the west and north shoulder of the Yala range. Once at the top, enjoy a 12km descent to the valley below (3800m) and your campsite for the night. There are several kilometers of technical rock riding at the end of today's ride.
Day 6: RIDE DAY 4: Yala Mt. East. The first hour this morning is a steep trail until you reach a moderate ascent to the pass. Max out at 4200m before the reward of over 20km of flowing single track to the trail exit below at 3000m. A quick soak in a local hot spring adds a further touch to a surreal day.
Day 7: RIDE DAY 5: Yulongxi Valley Ride. The first part of the day takes you up a gorgeous river valley to an alpine waterfall. From here, join a mountain road to the top of the pass for a sweeping view of Yulongxi valley. Following lunch, drop into the valley and ride 20km to the warm hospitality of a local semi-nomadic family home (3,950m).
Day 8: RIDE DAY 6: Zemei Pass. Your last 11km ascent of the trip includes the most breathtaking view in all of Eastern Tibet: the Minya Konka (Gongga Mountain) range. At 4550m, this pass offers one of the most up close views of a mountain of this size. Descend 13km to the romantic village of Zemei below and enjoy a trek to the monastery before dinner.
Day 9: RIDE DAY 7: Zemei Valley Ride. After a 30km descent out of the alpine highlands through a narrow canyon further down, a shuttle will carry you back to Chengdu for a celebration banquet and a hot shower.
Day 10: DEPART.
